Spotlight on: Hermia Community Energy CIC

Who are we speaking to today?

Jonathan & Sophia

In one sentence can you describe what Hermia Energy CIC do?

Hermia Energy CIC is a community interest company which owns and manages two onshore wind farms in Scotland - located west of Glasgow and southeast of Edinburgh.

How did Hermia Energy CIC begin?

Since 2014, we have been involved in construction of a number of wind turbines in Scotland, generating clean energy which we export to the grid. Hermia Community Energy is a Community Interest Company with the following objects:

  • Support for those suffering from fuel poverty in Scotland

  • Research into energy technology

  • Research into malignant, neurological and wasting diseases

  • Support for those suffering from such diseases

  • The deployment of renewable energy in Africa

  • Support for the elderly, disabled and poor of the UK

All annual profits are distributed to charities and organisations that support the work that aligns with these objectives. We continue to grow the wind turbine portfolio and are currently supporting the construction of a new wind farm, situated between Edinburgh and Glasgow.

What has been your biggest achievement in creating a positive impact so far? On a team and or individual level?

To date, Hermia's wind farms have generated over 125,000,000 kWH of clean energy, which has saved about 47,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. Hermia has donated almost £200,000 of profits to various charities and organisations. These include Breast Cancer Now, the Fuel Bank Foundation, RSABI, Age Scotland and Ardgowan Hospice.

What’s been your favourite project to work on?

Honestly, they are all horrible in their complexity and fraught with risk, but we get to meet nice people along the journey and the results make all the pain worthwhile.

How can people & the community support Hermia Energy CIC?

Learn more about what net zero entails for the UK – there are lots of resources out there and we can help people to find accurate sources of information.

Do you have any opportunities available now?

Not at the moment, however any opportunities available within the team will be shared with the Better Space team.
